This project was created in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. Amidst widespread media speculation about the possibility of World War III and the looming threat of nuclear conflict, a palpable sense of collective fear pervaded society, which the media often exploited to boost circulation. Rather than succumbing to this narrative, I embarked on a project to spotlight the resilience and hope evident in public demonstrations of solidarity and individual acts of compassion.
The images are crafted from photographs captured at Ukrainian solidarity protests, supplemented by a collection of daily newspapers reporting on the invasion. These newspapers were meticulously collaged into the images alongside excerpts from Tolstoy's "War and Peace." The chosen quote reflects an internal contemplation as a character, initially filled with patriotic fervour, confronts the stark realities of war and longs for the tranquillity of a distant hillside where peace reigns supreme.
